Why this trip

Taormina photos and ancient ruins alongside Catania markets and Ortigia mornings instead of another Duomo queue in Florence. Greek history, volcano drama, and incredible food — without a three-week Adriatic arc. Easy to shorten if someone joins for part of it.

The idea

Eastern Sicily — Greek ruins, volcano, and one pretty hill town — Italy beyond Rome and Florence.

Base in Catania (real city, street food) not only Taormina (postcard). Syracuse/Ortigia for Greek theater and island old town. One Etna weekday. Taormina for the traditional ‘wow’ postcard day — but don’t live there the whole week.

Pre-book Catania and Ortigia. Taormina is the postcard day — don’t overstay it.

Day-by-day itinerary

Eight days: Catania base first, Ortigia overnight for Greek history, Taormina for the postcard, Etna tour on a weekday. Pre-book all lodging windows.

1. Day 1

   Land Catania

   Fly CTA. eSIM, taxi to pre-booked mid-grade hotel near centro storico (not a resort). Evening stroll: Piazza Duomo, elephant fountain, first arancini. Fish market closes afternoon — save it for tomorrow morning.

   Pre-book: Catania nights 1–3 + Ortigia + Taormina

2. Day 2

   Catania fish market & baroque

   Base: CataniaWhole crew

   La Pescheria before 11am — loud, real, cheap eats at the edges. Via Etnea walk, baroque churches, granita break. Afternoon siesta honest in Sicily. Evening aperitivo near the duomo.

3. Day 3

   Train to Ortigia

   Base: Ortigia / SyracuseTraditional checklist

   Regional train to Syracuse (~1 hr). Check into Ortigia island hotel. Afternoon: island lanes, Arethusa spring, sunset over the harbor. Dinner on the piazza — old Europe harbor night.

4. Day 4

   Greek theater & archeology

   Base: Ortigia / SyracuseTraditional checklist

   Morning: Neapolis archeological park — Greek theater, Roman ampitheater. Teen history hook without a Florence museum marathon. Afternoon back on Ortigia for swimming if warm enough, or gelato and slow lanes.

5. Day 5

   Taormina transfer

   Train/bus north to Taormina (~2 hrs). Check in — keep this to one or two nights max. Greek theater view, Corso Umberto stroll, Isola Bella if you want the beach photo. The postcard wow day — balanced with Catania’s street-level energy earlier in the week.

6. Day 6

   Mount Etna

   Base: Taormina or CataniaWhole crew

   Book a weekday guided Etna tour (crater hike or 4×4 depending on fitness). Weather-flexible — refundable if possible. Teen gets volcano drama; adults get landscape. Return to Catania same evening if you prefer the airport hotel for flight day.

7. Day 7

   Buffer Catania
