Taiwan by Rail
Cross Taiwan by rail — Taipei to the east coast and back.
An airport stop once suggested something. This trip answers the question properly: Does Taiwan actually click? Cool-weather months, strong transit, and a full island loop instead of a weekend in Taipei.
Why this trip
Taiwan sits between familiarity and discovery. The point isn’t bargain hunting — it’s seeing whether social and cultural pull holds up when you live on the rails for three to four weeks: Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, then the east coast’s different pace before circling back.
The idea
Cross Taiwan by rail — Taipei to the east coast and back.
Museums, temples, harbor cities, and scenic trains. See whether the place still clicks once you’re not just changing planes.
What the days could feel like
Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.
Morning
Coffee near the hotel, then MRT or train to the next neighborhood layer.
Afternoon
Temples, museums, or a coastal/mountain day trip depending on the city.
Evening
Night market or harbor walk — the social part of the day.
Anchor experiences
- Six days in Taipei: museums, neighborhoods, day trips to mountain or coast
- Tainan’s older Taiwan — temples, local food, slower streets
- Kaohsiung harbor and modern waterfront without Taipei intensity
- East coast rail through Hualien or Taitung
- Return to Taipei with fresh eyes before leaving
Suggested route
Not a locked itinerary — a shape of the trip with room to bounce.
Real-world cost picture
Winter is mild; avoid summer heat/humidity if you can.
Strong value: excellent trains, great food, and lodging that doesn’t punish you for staying three weeks.
- Flights
- West Coast → TPE: often ~$550–1,000 RT in Nov–Feb if you’re patient on Google Flights.
- Lodging
- ~$35–75/night for solid hotels / Airbnb-style stays in major cities.
- Food
- ~$20–40/day if you live on night markets and local spots — easy win.
- Getting around
- MRT + HSR + scenic east-coast rail. HSR Taipei–Kaohsiung is fast and reasonable; full island loop often ~$150–300 in tickets.
- Trip ballpark
- ~$2,200–4,200 for ~3–4 weeks solo, lean-comfortable.

Advice
- Curated
Aim for November–February — mild weather and less punishing humidity than summer.
- Curated
Use HSR for the west-coast spine, then slow TRA along the east for the scenery.
