Uruguay · Montevideo & Colonia
Uruguay — Soft Landing
Montevideo as an easy first South America trip.
Not the cheapest South American country — and that’s okay. The point isn’t maximum arbitrage. It’s finally putting feet on the continent somewhere manageable.
Why this trip
South America can feel like a leap. Uruguay lowers the temperature: walkable neighborhoods, museums, cafés, Spanish practice, long Rambla walks. Colonia for a historic interlude. Optional Buenos Aires as reconnaissance, not a month-long commitment based on internet stereotypes.
The idea
Montevideo as an easy first South America trip.
Live near the Rambla for a few weeks. Optional Buenos Aires by ferry — sample it, don’t commit to a whole Argentina month.
What the days could feel like
Not a rigid itinerary — a realistic rhythm.
Morning
Rambla walk and café — let the city become familiar.
Afternoon
Museum, neighborhood, or ferry day if sampling BA.
Evening
Long dinner, Spanish practice, early night if you want it.
Anchor experiences
- 14–17 days living near a walkable Rambla neighborhood
- Museums, cafés, markets, and Spanish in daily use
- Colonia del Sacramento — slow historic interlude
- Optional Buenos Aires ferry sample — 3–4 days max
- Return to Montevideo before leaving
Suggested route
Not a locked itinerary — a shape of the trip with room to bounce.
Real-world cost picture
Optional BA is reconnaissance — don’t let it eat the whole budget.
Not the cheapest South America — you’re paying for ease. Flights from the US are often the painful line item.
- Flights
- West Coast → MVD (often via limão hubs): commonly ~$800–1,500 RT. Watch for mistake/deal spikes.
- Lodging
- Montevideo walkable neighborhood: ~$40–80/night or monthly deals that undercut hotels.
- Food
- ~$25–45/day cafés and asado culture — not Bangkok cheap, still manageable.
- Getting around
- Bus/walk in Montevideo; ferry to Buenos Aires is a separate ticket (~varies — check Buquebus/Colonia Express).
- Trip ballpark
- ~$3,000–5,500 for ~3–4 weeks including a short BA sample.

Advice
- Curated
Hunt MVD flight deals hard — airfare is usually the bottleneck, not lodging.
- Curated
Keep Buenos Aires optional reconnaissance — don’t let the ferry eat the whole budget.
